Etude House Color My Brows in Light Brown

Since I've dyed my hair in a lighter color using Etude House Bubble Hair Dye in Natural Brown, I've been wanting my eyebrow colors to 'match' my hair color. Eyebrow color, when matched with your current haircolor, is more pleasing to look at. I've scratched off the option of bleaching my brows because I'm just damn scared to do it.
My eyebrow hairs are sparse so I always fill it in using a taupe eyebrow pencil. The color payoff is a nice shade of neutral brown (not the reddish kind that is common with brown pencils) but I still want it to be lighter. If I use a lighter shade of pencil, it just wouldn't make sense because my eyebrow hairs are still dark. The strands would just float in the backdrop of light brown pencil which I don't like, of course. :)
Obviously, a nice brow mascara would do the job! I got Etude House Color My Brows Mascara in Light Brown. It reminds me of MAC's GirlBoy brow set.

I am in awe when I see nail art posted online by bloggers. I find it challenging to 'paint' little characters on each nail. I remember in grade school, I would be wearing nail art (courtesy of my mom) during intramurals day. It was the only time when nail polish was allowed in school. Riding on the nail art wagon, I attempted sparkly ombre nails in orange.

Ombre nails are so easy to do. If you are too lazy to use sponge applicators or if you lack nail art tools, then this technique is for you.

One of the interesting dishes on mom's birthday menu is Sausage Pasta. It's like your typical meat sauce spaghetti sauce with sausages, presented in a more appetizing/enticing way.

Pink and White

One of my favorite colors are pink and white. I think their both feminine and fresh colors. I could never go wrong with white and pink. Powder pink specifically is an uber dainty color that I like wearing during special occasions. My pink shade of choice changes when it comes to my makeup. I like my lipstick to be bright pink, my blush cotton candy pink and my nail polish bubblegum and Barbie pink.
I own more LWD's (Little White Dress) than LBD's because sometimes, I feel like the color black makes me look dull. Besides that, I am done with I-will-wear-black-only stage. This was a stage when I was full of insecurities, I supposed that black clothing would hide my insecurities (Psychological thing, I guess). I believe that wearing white helps me fake a glow and it just make feel so bright and optimistic about life.

Being economical and too lazy to make churros from scratch, the snack of the day became fried breads with chocolate sauce. Vanilla Pancakes with Homemade Chunky Mango Syrup

We absolutely hate mangoes going into waste, so when the over ripe mangoes came to the brink of oblivion, my mom transformed into a yummy pancake syrup. She wanted to retain the goodness of the fruit so instead of pureeing it, she cut 1 mango into chunks and added it to 2 cups of boiling simple sugar syrup.

Meanwhile, me, being a vanilla-obsessed girl, added and extra punch to the usual pancake batter. It's not a master chef moment, I just added an extra teaspoon of vanilla extract! I like my pancakes vanilla-laden and sweet. :)

Homemade Fries and Honey Ketchup

I have to admit that I always go for McDonald's French Fries. I just love it's salty, deep-fried goodness! Eating fast food everyday is simply unhealthy so I brought fast food to the kitchen. Making potato fries at home is super easy. You just need lots of potatoes, clean, peel 'em, then cut them into wedges. Soak in water (prevents browning and makes the fries crispy) and let them deep-fry until golden brown. Season with salt. Sometimes I like them with ground pepper. If you're feeling fancy, season the fries with truffle salt or truffle oil.

If you like your fries with ketchup, I suggest this tasty alternative to your usual french-fries-eating.

I was looking for a bright pink shade of lipstick for me to wear on occasional nightouts with friends. I went straight to Etude House because I have been a big fan of their vibrant colored lipsticks (and also other stuff they have hehehe). As soon as I entered the store, I had my eye on the VIP Dear Darling section because I was very satisfied with my OR 204 lipstick. The RD 104 VIP Dear Darling Lipstick got my attention. It almost looks like neon fuchsia on the tube. I immediately tried it on my lips. It felt like confetti falling from above, I have found my needed dose of bright fuchsia lips! I grabbed a box and then aimed for the bubble hair dye (I shall post a review on this soon).

Chocolate Ice Cream Truffles

Last night was full of rain. When my daily chocolate craving has surfaced, I was too scared to go out and get my chocolate fix. My son was also having the same issue as mine because he kept on opening the fridge to look for something. When he didn't find anything sweet to nibble on, he grabbed the jar of tsokolate batirol and opened it! You see, both of us like the bittersweet taste of the tsokolate batirol balls. We like better when we eat it on its own rather than mixing it into warm milk to make hot tsokolate batirol.

I felt my son's longing for chocolate (dramatic ha!) but the storm wouldn't let me go to the mall or even the nearest convenience store to get choco, so I'm making the chocolate come to me! I and decided to make chocolate truffles myself.

I used another version of truffle recipe, I veered away from the usual chocolate bar and cream recipe and instead went for cocoa powder. The result was it tasted like chocolate ice cream truffles. After forming it into balls, I rolled them in confectioner's sugar and kept it in an airtight container in the mid rack of the freezer. One bite feels like a bite of dark chocolate ice cream!

Dora the explorer was there, she was actually the main event. The Beauty Demo was a treat for the mommies who brought their children to the event. Oh yes, I met Dora. Too bas I couldn't record her dance since I was busy prepping up for my makeup demo.

So I've been going outdoors or anywhere where the sun hits the area. Mainit sa Pilipinas. Period. I've got a uniform that's weather appropriate. Most of my summer outfits are made from cotton and mostly skin-baring. Skin-baring in the sense that the arms and legs are exposed. Not naman that abs are exposed. Dealing with Bad Eye Days

If most girls experience bad hair days, I get to experience bad 'eye' days. I do get the occasional bad hair day but I mostly wake up to a bad 'eye' day. When I lack sleep or overflow with stress, my eyes are imbalanced when I wake up. The right eye is monolid, the left is not. There's nothing wrong with being monolid but I just hate when my eyes obviously do not look the same. I hate it the most when I have to attend to a big event. I feel insecure and less beautiful (I know, this is shallow, but a girl can be vain and shallow some times hihihihihi!)

Stila Marrakesh Eye Quad - Swatches and Review

I've had Stila Marrakesh eye Quad for some time now. This eye quad has also been around the market for quite some time too, it's an old Stila product. I label it as 'my pampaganda' palette, or the 'fresh lang' makeup palette. The colors are adorable and you can produce beautiful looks by mixing up different eyeshadows. Pinks and golden shades really go together and the Marrakesh palette proves this fact. The darkest shade can be used to produce a more dramatic eye. If you want to get the fresh, glowing look, you can go ahead and combine the gold eyeshadow and the salmon eyeshadow (or use just one). The lightest shade can be used for highlighting the brow bone and on the inner rims of the eyes. The downside of this palette is that it only shows of greatly to fair skin. I've tried the colors on morena skin and unfortunately, it just didn't look right. You also need a good eye primer or eye base if you want to intensify the colors.

Of Great Coffee and Yummy Waffles

Last Thursday, I went to ACLC-Antipolo as a guest speaker for their career guide seminar series. i tackled image development or simply described as "dressing to impress". I taught the graduating students the importance and steps of looking presentable at work. I had a blast with the students because they were interested thus cooperative. I can't wait to see them get the jobs they desire. i hope i could come back to ACLC-Antipolo because I want to discuss further techniques in personal makeup. Feeling ko kulang na kulang yung tinuro ko.

Anyway after the seminar, JD, (the school's admission officer) wanted to grab a sweet snack and a cup of joe before heading home. He took me to Hanuel Cafe which was a few steps away from the school and Shopwise. It is run by Chris, a Korean who fell in love with the city. We were there early in the afternoon, so it wasn't packed yet with students (Pinoy and Korean). (sorry for the low-res photos, I only used my phone-cam because I forgot to bring my digicam)

They have several coffee selections, you can get it either iced or hot. JD ordered iced cafe mocha while I chose Iced caramel machiatto. For our snack, I ordered waffles, since I was craving for it since the beginning of the month. I was surprised to see Chris, prepare our coffee and waffles. He was “minorly” assisted by his barista.

The iced drinks were delicious and refreshing, and the waffles are sooooo yummmmy!!! The waffles were cooked to perfection. The snacks that they serve in the cafe are cooked/prepared only when the customer orders it, so it's guaranteed to be freshly-made. Chris's parents own a restaurant located on the second floor so I guess that explains the freshly-made goodies.

I'm planning to take my high school friends here since we love cozy cafes and yummy food!

I just got home from an out-of-town shoot. The place was amazingly beautiful, almost virginal! I felt so lucky to set foot on Baler. It's a surfer's dream. Although I'm not a surfer, I truly appreciated the natural beauty of the place. The water is really clean. The place is not so commercialized, thank God! You'll really feel like you're in a getaway in some luxurious private island!

It's a new year and I am proud to say that my 2010 rocked! I learned a lot of stuff that I will forever cherish. It really rocked because the ratio of good times and bad times is 7:1. That's how I choose see it anyway. I strongly believe that being optimistic majorly helps your life. Since I started a positive attitude (oh yeah, I should have done this way before) great things have started to come to my life. I am thankful to God for all the blessings He has showered my family with.

I'm a year older and I have a lot to be thankful for this year. I can say that last year was full of discoveries and unbelievable opportunities. I hope that this year would even be better than last year.

I had a humble birthday celebration with my family. I wanted a simple one. I ordered lunch from amber's where their pancit malabon and pichi-pichi ROCKS!!! I like out-of-town shoots. You get to work and have a vacation at the same time. The only downside is you need to bring a lot of your 'work' stuff. I really hate it when I regret not bringing a certain item when I'm away from the house (especially when I'm miles away!).

Another upside is you get to bond with the people you work with. In my job, I don't really have an office thus I don't have officemates. I cherish the 'office' chika I have with the team when I'm at shoots.

I like it when my hair doesn't look too done or too perfect. I find it too stiff for my liking. Although I am a big fan of tight, high ponytails, 'undone hair' still wins the game for me. For example, when doing milkmaid braids, if it's done too perfectly you might be mistaken as someone who is channeling Cindy Brady (the youngest girl of the Brady Bunch family).

To compliment the imperfect hair, I wanted the barely there look. I just wore tinted moisturizer, gel eyeliner and coral lipstick.

Baby Bedtime

My son has a bad sleeping habit of sleeping at 2 a.m. I tried turning off the tv, using a nightlamp but it wasn't effective. He just went on and played with his toys. He likes doing this most especially when I have a makeup gig the following day. Talk about mental and physical fatigue.

I then realized that bedtime massage never fails. I felt a bit stupid for not doing it for the past week because I have been busy with a lot of things and forgot a lot of my mommy duties. (Sorry anak, bumabawi na si Nanan!)

Massaging is a great aid it letting our babies relax and get quality sleep. Remember when we get massages from the spa we doze off after a few minutes. It's the same logic with babies. I'm so glad that our Filipino culture embraces haplos ng pagmamahal as a must.

It helps our babies build strong bones too. Babies can't go to the gym to exercise and build strong bones, they need us to help them.

I also play soft music in our room, and read him a bedtime story before our massage. He gets sleepy easily when I massage his hair. After the calming massage, I give him warm milk, I figured this out when he gets sleepy when I was still breastfeeding him. Breast milk is warm and drinking warm liquids help us rest well.

The next morning, my son is energized, ready to face another day!

Johnson's Baby has been with millions of mom in their mommyhood journeys with their babies. I remember growing up using their products because my mom placed their full trust on them.
It's a good thing that Johnson's believes in the importance of sleep for a growing child, they are giving away special gifts for our Bedtime Believer Moms (and Dads).

How to Look and Feel Fresh After a Commute

Commuting is tiresome and stressful. From the tricycle rides, jeepney rides and siksikan buses and MRT coaches. It's an everyday task that spells hassle especially during rush hours. Looking and feeling fresh is a constant challenge for commuters because of these.

I knew I wanted to make banana milkshake because I was afraid the bananas would rot. Sayang naman. Bananas are rich in potassium and since it has milk, it also has calcium. My son loves bananas so much so it was a sure bet that he'll love the milkshake version.

Videoke Night

One of my fave songs to "perform"

Last night, my extra happy neighbors were singing their lungs out. They had been using their videoke machine since brunch and stopped by 4am. (Yes, I had a terrible sleep.) I know they shouldn't be deprived of their right to enjoy a joyous occasion but my goodness, it was weeknight! People need to go to school or work the following day. My son, thank God, was able to sleep soundly. Otherwise, I would have a bigger problem.

I didn't want to ruin my day by constantly thinking about how annoying their singing volume was. I instead reminisced my happy videoke nights with my friends. My reminiscing was occasionally interrupted when the neighbor would sing off-key or when she did a failed Sarah Geronimo vocal range.

Anyway, here's my videoke list:

"Crazy for You" - Madonna. Reminds me of happy stuff (Uuyyyy)
"You Got it All" - The Jets. The song reminds my happy state.
"Heaven Knows" - Rick Price (Senti mode)
"I'll Never Go" - I got caught with the Basha and Popoy phenomenon

I love videoke nights. My friends and I would tease each other about our drama phase whenever one friend would go through a heartbreak and her survival. We would also talk about past, present loves and possibly future loves (yung mga nagpapacute sa tabi-tabi). Sorry to sound like a high school girl, but yeah, it's fun to talk about those stuff. You also don't need a great singing voice to enjoy the night or get high scores. You just need to perform really really well and be familiar with song's lyrics.

The usual videoke food fare would be chicken fingers, calamares and nachos. Iced tea would be our official drink of the night. Arrgggh, now I want a videoke night of my own. All the elements of a fun night is can be found in videoke nights: fun, music, laughter, friends, family, reminiscing and food!

I'll text my friends regarding our Saturday plans. I hope I can convince them to do videoke! :) As for my family, I still can't convince them to do a videoke night once a month. I guess they're too scared I'll annoy the neighbors too. Hahaha!

Balikbayan Goodies

Sample Menu: My favorite Pinoy dishes (with gata)

Lately, I have been obsessed with menu planning. I guess it's because I soak my eyes on Nigella Lawson's shows. I like her cooking and presentation style. It's not pretentious nor snobbish at all. she doesn't care if the veggies weren't sliced perfectly or the cake wasn't in a perfect round shape. She just cared for the intense flavor the food would give to awaiting palates.

Me, on the other hand, is not a big fan of British food especially the floral-flavored, berry overloaded stuff. I guess I'm just too Pinoy or too scared to go out of my comfort zone. I prefer to drown in Filipino dishes which are rich in flavor, or just anything excess, or maybe deadly if consumed a lot.

The current menu I have in my mind are composed of my favorite Filipino dishes. I promise to cook these dishes without shortcuts (nor healthy ingredients in mind hahaha!)

My Menu-To-Do-List (warning: this menu has no theme at all)

chicken bacolod - my family loves this barbecued chicken. I shall serve this with garlic rice and vinegar with siling labuyo OR
crispy chicken bicol express - I'm going to experiment on this one
mangga't bagoong - green mangoes with sweet & spicy bagoong
guinamis - i just call this buko salad drink, i wasn't aware it had an official name (ignorant me)

*as soon as I find the perfect recipe for this, I shall post photos and the recipe, of course!

I am thankful for express dinners or what I call homemade fast food. My hunger is solved by simple dishes that are simple and easy to make. The great part about it is that it's delish!

Hawaiian Spam is one of my favorite dinners. I love Spam and I love pineapples. Their marriage in this dish is a dream!

baking adventures: flourless chocolate cake

first attempt hehehe!

I took a short course in baking and pastry arts some 4 years ago. I opened an online bakeshop before but i stopped its operation when I got busy on a previous corporate job in a beauty and wellness company.

I am not a fancy baker, I prefer my baked goods to look rustic and imperfect. I want it to look like something mommy would bake.

After a long hiatus from baking I decided to attempt baking flourless chocolate cake. I used dark chocolate pieces and dark cocoa powder. I like to perfect this cake (from the family recipe baul) because I am planning to serve this on Christmas Day.

My guinea pigs' reactions:

I'm sure there are days when you just feel you need to get primped up under pressure. You just need these essentials to survive:


(i tried to be artsy fartsy but i failed hehehehe)

always start with a clean base. wash your face with your favorite facial cleanser
apply tinted moisturizer with spf on your face and neck
use cream blush on your cheeks if you want a dewy look or use powder blush if you're really in a hurry
fill your brows with a taupe eyebrow pencil for natural looking brows
set your face & neck with loose powder
curl lashes and swipe two coats of waterproof mascara
prettify your puckers by putting on your favorite shade of lipstick

i love to eat. i grew up in a home where lunches were like eating in restaurants. my mom is the best ever!!! if you ask me what favorite dish i love the most i'd give you a very long list. she's just superb. she makes a mad sizzling bulalo, sisig, roasted chicken, baked spareribs, shrimp curry and ginisang sayote to name a few. her version of pinoy classic dishes like adobo, sinigang, bicol express, paksiw na isda makes me have 2 extra servings of rice, no kidding.

aside from cooking, she also bakes. her baked goodies are sikat with my friends and colleagues. her baking portfolio composes of apple crumble, cheesecakes, cream puffs, birthday cakes, pizza rolls, cupcakes, cookies, brownies etc. i was so inspired by her, i decided to take up a short course in baking and pastry arts. as expected, i never got to her level of excellence and talent hehehe. i am, however, proud to say that my chocolate pudding and chocolate truffles have a large number of fans.

I remember when there was a time that mom makes us homemade ice cream! she made ice cream with different flavors, whatever her fans would request. after that summer, i found retail ice cream brands to taste like mediocrity.

I can count on my fingers the number of times my mom would pack junk food for our baon. I admit there was a time when I get inggit with my classmates because of their potato chips; now, i am so proud that my mom spent a lot time preparing our baon to make sure we got our nutrients and tastebuds right. Her school baon portfolio, to name a few are the following: salibury steak with lots of award-winning gravy, grilled cheese sandwiches, chewy brownies, fish cakes and ma po tofu. Now that I'm already working, mom is so matiyaga to prepare baon for me when I need it. A smile on my face would appear when I'd see my lunchbag to have a main course, a side dish of veggies and dessert every time. my veggie side dish would vary from ginisang pechay, sayote, green beans or pinakbet, dessert would be yogurt, sometimes a piece of fruit or a freshly baked goodie.

hay mommy, can you please rub off a bit of your cooking talent on me? now that i am a mother myself, i would try my best to make your apo's tummy very happy.

Paula and Dianne were to attend the wedding of their very good friend. Both ladies had beautiful features, it would be easy to glam them up.

Dianne

Dianne wanted a simple and natural look. I used browns and pinks on her pretty eyes. I added a peachy-pink blush for a natural flush. To finish off the look, I chose a lipstick that was closest to her natural lip shade.

Paula

To complement Paula's red dress, we both agreed to have her wear red lips. We wanted to channel the 50's vibe with red lips as the focal point. Paula, having lush and full lips could easily pull it off. I chose a clear red shade to make the makeup look modern. For her big, beautiful eyes, a cat-eye completed the look.

Happy day everyone! I'd like to share an article about yours truly (ehem wehehe) written by Alex Lapa. I shared the steps I took to become a fashion stylist and how a typical work day goes :)

Imagine your work day consisting of this: hopping from one fashion boutique to another, being surrounded by beautiful clothes, shoes, bags and accessories and putting them all together to make a statement. It certainly sounds like a glamorous dream—you don’t even need to spend money and in fact, it’s you who get paid for having these styled works of yours published or paraded for all to see. Such is the life of a fashion stylist.
